Harris County Precinct 4 installs 14.1 miles of sidewalks in CFISD

By  |

Harris County Precinct 4 Commissioner Lesley Briones held a ribbon cutting ceremony at Cypress Lakes High School on March 31 to celebrate the 14.1 miles of sidewalks installed around 13 different CFISD campuses as part of the Sidewalks 4 Precinct 4 initiative.

The initiative, launched in March 2024, is a $20 million investment that installed 50 miles of sidewalks throughout Precinct 4 filling in existing gaps. Locations within one mile of schools, parks, bus stops and other important community sites were prioritized.

“Thank you to Harris County Precinct 4 and Commissioner Briones for showing a commitment to student pedestrian safety in CFISD,” said Dr. Doug Killian, CFISD superintendent of schools. “Due to their proactive efforts, an additional 14.1 miles of sidewalks will provide safe walking paths for students and community members at 13 campuses.”

Community concerns and data-driven analysis heavily shaped the Sidewalks 4 Precinct 4 initiative, with having safe walkways for students quickly becoming a top priority.

“As we all know, this school year we’ve faced a lot of challenges,” said Sirron Norris, Cypress Lakes junior. “Budget cuts meant we had fewer buses, which led to more students walking to school without a safe path, but our school and community came together to find a solution and that solution is right here with these sidewalks.”
