CFISD names new asst. superintendent for communication and community relations
Joel Weckerly, director of communication, was named assistant superintendent for communication and community relations on Nov. 20. Weckerly replaces Leslie Francis, who will retire in December.
Weckerly has 19 years of experience in education, all in CFISD. He began his career as a sports writer and editor for the Corsicana Daily Sun in 2004 before becoming an assistant sports editor and editor for Houston Community Newspapers. Weckerly joined CFISD in 2007 as a communication specialist and was named the assistant director of communication in 2014. He was named to his current role in 2016.
In this new role, Weckerly will oversee the communication, community engagement and community programs departments.
Weckerly is actively involved with the Texas School Public Relations Association (TSPRA) and currently serves as the TSPRA Houston/Beaumont region executive vice president. He was recently elected as the TSPRA at-large vice president.
He was named the TAJE “Friend of Journalism” in 2019 and in 2024 was awarded the Abilene Christian University (ACU) Gutenberg Award, which honors alumni from the department of journalism and mass communication who have demonstrated a distinguished body of professional work.
Weckerly earned his Bachelor of Science in Journalism from ACU.
“The best district in the nation deserves the best stories to be told to the public,” Weckerly said. “My team and I have been those grateful storytellers for nearly two decades, and I look forward to writing a new chapter with three high-performing departments who make CFISD shine.”
