Houston Methodist Employees Paint Artwork on Opening Day of Cypress Hospital: A Creative Celebration of Healing and Community
As Houston Methodist Cypress Hospital opened its doors, a unique and meaningful artistic initiative took place, helping to set the tone for the facility’s commitment to healing and community. On the opening day, Houston Methodist employees participated in a special art project that highlighted the power of creativity in healthcare, bringing both staff and the surrounding community together in a shared experience of reflection and joy.
The artwork, created by artist Amy Malkan, is a vibrant, nature-inspired painting featuring the iconic bluebonnet, Texas’ state flower. The piece will be prominently displayed at the employee entrance, offering a warm welcome to all who enter. Designed with both patients and staff in mind, the artwork serves as a reminder of the calming and therapeutic benefits of nature. Scientific studies show that natural landscapes can reduce stress and enhance overall well-being, which is particularly important in a healthcare environment.
“The painting is meant to set a positive, cheerful tone for employees, especially as they begin their day in a demanding and stressful setting,” says Malkan. “By incorporating elements of nature and vibrant colors, we hope to provide a visual escape that promotes calm and positivity.”

What makes this painting even more special is that it is a collaborative effort, allowing Houston Methodist employees to contribute directly to the artwork. On opening day, employees had the opportunity to add their own touch to the painting by stamping bluebonnet petals in places where they felt inspired. This interactive approach not only allows them to personalize the artwork but also gives them a sense of ownership over the piece. When the painting is completed, employees can take pride in knowing that their contributions are an integral part of the final product.
The act of creating this artwork is part of Houston Methodist’s larger mission to integrate the arts into the healthcare experience. “Healthcare can be a stressful environment, and we’re focused on finding ways to create a more holistic atmosphere for both our employees and patients,” explains a representative from the Center for Performing Arts Medicine. “Art plays a key role in this by offering a space for reflection, creativity, and relaxation.”
This program, which was central to the grand opening celebrations, recognizes the significant accomplishment of opening a new hospital. It also provides employees with a unique opportunity to engage in an artistic activity that promotes both personal and professional well-being. “Opening a hospital is a monumental achievement, and it’s something that many employees will only experience once in their career. This project allows them to reflect on this momentous occasion while contributing to something meaningful,” adds the representative.

In addition to the employee-focused program, Houston Methodist offers various art initiatives for the broader Houston community. These programs are designed to offer artistic opportunities for all, fostering a deeper sense of connection and creativity throughout the region.
While some may not consider themselves artists, the creative process of contributing to the artwork offers more than just a chance to paint. It provides a moment to pause, unwind, and engage with something fun and fulfilling. “It’s not about being an artist; it’s about having the opportunity to reflect, communicate, and experience the joy of creativity,” says the representative.

For Houston Methodist Cypress Hospital, this artistic initiative is just one example of how the organization is committed to creating a holistic and supportive environment for everyone involved. By embracing the power of art and nature, the hospital is helping to foster a sense of well-being and community from the very first day of its opening.
