Houston Texans Linebacker E.J. Speed Visits Houston Methodist Cypress as Part of NFL’s Crucial Catch Initiative
Houston Methodist Cypress had the honor of welcoming Houston Texans linebacker E.J. Speed during his day off, as he visited patients battling cancer in the hospital’s infusion center. The visit was part of the NFL’s annual Crucial Catch initiative, which focuses on raising awareness about cancer prevention, early detection, and risk reduction.

A Personal Connection
For Speed, the visit was more than just an appearance—it was deeply personal. His own brother passed away from cancer while Speed was in high school, an experience that continues to shape his perspective and compassion. “I’ve been with patients and in these rooms before, so I know how hard it is,” Speed shared. “Coming back and giving back today was a special thing for me.”

Impact on Patients
Patients and staff alike were uplifted by Speed’s presence, as he offered encouragement, shared his story, and reminded them they are not alone in their fight. His heartfelt visit highlights the importance of not only raising awareness but also connecting with those affected by cancer on a human level.

Crucial Catch Initiative
The NFL Crucial Catch program is a league-wide effort in partnership with the American Cancer Society to promote cancer screenings, risk education, and overall health awareness. Through visits like this, players are helping to bring attention to the importance of early detection and community support in the fight against cancer.
Houston Methodist Cypress was proud to host Speed and to stand alongside the Texans and the NFL in their commitment to cancer awareness and prevention.
