CFISD programs come together to support Hill Country flood victims
When disaster struck communities in the Texas Hill Country earlier this month, the CFISD community united for a swift response.
Through separate fundraising efforts, CFISD’s athletics and career and technical education departments collected more than $56,000 in gift cards to send to their school district counterparts in the communities impacted by the devastating floods.
CFISD athletics programs organized a gift card drive between July 7-17 to support Kerrville ISD, where longtime CFISD coach Curtis Neill is now the athletic director and head football coach at Tivy High School.
Specifically targeting Home Depot and Lowe’s gift cards to help with rebuilding costs, students and coaches rallied to collect a total of $33,535 in gift cards delivered to high school summer strength and conditioning camps.
“In 2017, our community was impacted by the floods of Hurricane Harvey,” said Charles Ament, CFISD associate athletic director. “Our community was the beneficiary of a tremendous outpouring of love from people who simply wanted to help. That love impacted many in a way that is indescribable, and we wanted to share our love with a community that was in need. We are tremendously proud of the efforts of the athletic programs in a coordinated effort with their communities to give back to those affected by the devastation in Kerrville.”
After ag teachers from Hunt and Kerrville ISDs posted to a Facebook page expressing their needs, Cypress Woods High School ag instructor Monica McClellan helped organize a donation effort among all 12 CFISD high school FFA programs. The programs donated more than 300 gift cards totaling $22,820 in a one-day drive on July 10.
“I am incredibly proud of the 12 high school FFA chapters across Cypress-Fairbanks ISD for coming together in a unified effort to raise awareness and support for the victims of the recent Central Texas floods,” said Mark Williams, CFISD director of career and technical education. “Their compassion and commitment to service reflect the very best of who we are. The Cypress-Fairbanks ISD community has always been known for its generosity and willingness to help those in need, and this initiative is another powerful example of that spirit in action.”
