LSC-CyFair Adds Second Evening Medical Assistant Cohort for Working Adults

Lone Star College-CyFair will launch a second evening hybrid cohort of its Medical Assistant Program in Spring 2027, giving working adults, parents, and career-changers a pathway into one of the nation’s fastest-growing healthcare fields without leaving their daytime jobs.

Evening classes meet Monday–Thursday from 6–10 p.m. and follow the same accredited curriculum as the daytime program.

“Demand for the first evening cohort is strong,” said Dr. Carol Ash, Vice President of Instruction. “This second cohort keeps healthcare education accessible for students who are balancing work, family, and school.”

The career
Medical assistants are cross-trained for clinical and administrative work in physician offices and outpatient settings — taking vitals, drawing blood, administering medications, managing electronic records, scheduling, and billing.  The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects strong growth through 2030, driven by expanding outpatient care and an aging population. In the Houston-Pasadena-The Woodlands area, medical assistants earn a median of about $42,110 a year.  Certified medical assistants in the West South Central region, which includes Texas, average $21.71 an hour, or about $41,700 a year, according to the 2025 AAMA Compensation and Benefits Report.

The program
The Spring 2027 evening cohort runs three semesters and ends with an eight-week, 240-hour practicum:

• Spring 2027: Medical Terminology, Administrative Procedures, Clinical Procedures
• Summer 2027: Anatomy and Physiology, EKG/CPR and First Aid, Interpersonal Communications, Medical Insurance, Medical Law and Ethics
• Fall 2027: Pharmacology, Laboratory Procedures, CMA review, and externship

Estimated cost for in-district students is about $7,000. The program is CAAHEP-accredited upon recommendation of MAERB.

How to apply

• Enroll at Lone Star College with a Medical Assisting major
• Attend a mandatory information session
• Complete the Medical Assistant HESI exam ($65)
• Meet published technical standards

HESI testing: Oct. 1–Nov. 23, 2026. Application deadline: Nov. 23, 2026. Status notifications: Nov. 24, 2026. Mandatory new-student orientation: Dec. 1, 2026, 6–8 p.m. Final acceptance requires a satisfactory background check and drug screen at the student’s expense.
