Birds, Binoculars, and Flood Protection: YES Prep students take flight with nature walk at hidden Cypress gem
Second-grade students from YES Prep Public Schools take an exciting field trip (binoculars in hand!) as they explore the magic of birdwatching and the science of flood protection during a special nature walk at the Kluge Stormwater Detention Basin.
Just in time for peak spring migration and before the start of hurricane season, this outdoor classroom experience, hosted by the Harris County Flood Control District, offered students a unique blend of environmental science and hands-on nature exploration. Led by local birding expert and Longwood community resident John Cocanower, the students participated in a guided nature walk around the basin, which helps reduce flood risk while supporting thriving ecosystems. The Kluge Stormwater Detention Basin is also a favorite spot for birdwatchers, with more than 200 species documented at the site. Through binoculars and curiosity, the young learners discovered how stormwater detention basins not only mitigate flooding but also serve as vital green spaces for both wildlife and the community.

Each spring, millions of birds fly through Harris County along the Central Flyway, which is one of North America’s busiest migration routes.
This fun, highly visual event highlights how smart infrastructure can support thriving ecosystems — and how the next generation of Houstonians is learning to value both!
