CFISD Board approves 2026-27 instructional calendar
The CFISD Board of Trustees approved the Districtwide Educational Improvement Council’s (DEIC) recommendations for the 2026-2027 instructional calendar during its regularly scheduled meeting on Nov. 10.
CFISD’s status as a District of Innovation enabled an exemption to a state law mandating that instruction for the school year may not begin before the fourth Monday in August — allowing for a more flexible calendar. Texas Education Code also requires school calendars to include a minimum of 75,600 minutes for students, a 187-day teacher contract and inclement weather days.
The DEIC — consisting of teachers, parents, business partners, community members and non-teaching professionals — met three times during September and October before recommending a calendar to the Board that is instructionally best for students and serves as a retention and recruitment tool.
The DEIC worked in feeder pattern groups to develop 12 calendars, each presented to the larger group before voting on two calendars to share with the community for input. More than 15,000 surveys were completed.
The 2026-2027 calendar includes the following key dates:
- Students begin school on Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2026.
- Labor Day, Sept. 7, 2026, is a student/staff holiday.
- Fall break is scheduled for Oct. 12-16, 2026.
- Thanksgiving break is scheduled for Nov. 23-27, 2026.
- A winter break is scheduled for students and staff (Dec. 21, 2026-Jan. 1, 2027).
- Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Jan. 18, 2027, is a student/staff holiday.
- A five-day spring break is scheduled for March 15-19, 2027.
- Friday, March 26, 2027, is a student/staff holiday.
- The school year will end on May 27, 2027 for students.
- Memorial Day, May 31, 2027, is a staff holiday.
- The calendar features three teacher work days that are also student holidays: Oct. 9, 2026; Nov. 3, 2026;and March 12, 2027.
- Oct. 9, 2026 and March 12, 2027 are designated as inclement weather makeup days.
