While most students look forward to spring break, those identified as homeless often dread the week away from the meals they receive at school.

Last year, Cypress-Fairbanks ISD McKinney-Vento Liaison Dr. Christina Porter contacted Cy-Fair Helping Hands seeking assistance in providing snacks for 550 homeless middle and high school students during spring break. The ministry immediately coordinated a community food drive, resulting in a remarkable outpouring of donations and community support. Once the goal was reached, CFHH volunteers packed duffel bags and delivered a truckload of snacks to an appreciative Dr. Porter and the McKinney-Vento staff.

This year, the drive was coordinated by Monique Lazard, Cy-Fair Helping Hands’ Senior Director of Homeless Services.

“This partnership helps ensure that students facing housing instability still feel cared for, supported, and remembered during times when school resources may be limited. Small acts of kindness can make a big difference in the lives of these homeless students,” reflected Lazard.

“Cy-Fair Helping Hands is incredibly grateful for the continued support of our community and partners,” said Executive Director Janet Ryan. “Because of their generosity, we have provided nearly 2,400 pounds of snacks for 1,050 CFISD homeless youth through this initiative in two years, while continuing to fulfill our mission of giving hope to the homeless in our Cy-Fair community.”
