Houston Methodist Cypress expands access to breast cancer clinical trials close to home
When Judith Knox went in for her routine mammogram, she never expected it would lead to a breast cancer diagnosis. Like many women, she anticipated the traditional course of treatment — surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. But at the Houston Methodist Neal Cancer Center at Cypress, Knox’s care team offered a new opportunity: the chance to participate in a clinical trial exploring a lower-dose approach to post-treatment hormonal therapy for women with low-risk, early-stage breast cancer.

After surgery confirmed that her cancer had not spread, Knox’s oncologist, Dr. Veena Chandrakar, introduced her to a clinical trial involving a lower dose of tamoxifen, a common hormonal therapy. The study aims to determine whether a reduced dosage can lessen side effects while maintaining the medication’s effectiveness in preventing recurrence.
Knox completed her abbreviated radiation therapy on September 23 and said her experience was smoother than expected. Now participating in the clinical trial, she hopes her story inspires other women to stay proactive about screenings and consider joining research that may improve treatment options for future patients.
“I’ve always trusted Houston Methodist,” said Knox. “Being part of this trial gave me options — and a sense of comfort knowing I had a voice in my care.”
Clinical researcher Rebecca Hildebrandt added, “This clinical trial is a wonderful low-risk, high-impact opportunity for women to contribute to the research and advancement of breast cancer treatment. Mrs. Knox is giving an invaluable gift to future women diagnosed with breast cancer.”
Dr. Chandrakar shared that the Houston Methodist Neal Cancer Center at Cypress currently has 15 active clinical trials, with plans to expand to 30 trials in the near future.
“This rapid growth, in just a few short months since our opening in July 2024, is groundbreaking for our community,” Dr. Chandrakar said. “We’re able to bring cutting-edge cancer research and innovative treatment options close to home.”
Nearby, Houston Methodist Willowbrook also offers 71 active oncology trials, providing northwest Houston residents with broader access to advanced cancer research and care.
