Cypress Woods HS computer science team wins Lockheed Martin Code Quest

By  |

The Cypress Woods High School computer science team is heading to regionals this weekend, and the Wildcats have already proven they can compete against the best of the best. On Feb. 28, they finished first at the Lockheed Martin Code Quest in Houston.

At the event, the team had to solve more than 20 problems created by Lockheed Martin computer programmers and engineers using the Java, Python, C# and/or C++ coding languages.

Sixteen teams squared off in Houston, but teams also competed in Grand Prairie and Fort Worth using the same problems from Lockheed Martin. Across all three locations in Texas, Cypress Woods’ team of seniors Koa AsagamiRyder Sanchez and Alaqmar Trunkwala was the highest scorer. Worldwide, the Wildcats were the fifth highest scoring team out of more than 2,000 competitors.

It’s a testament to the efforts of Asagami, Sanchez and Trunkwala. All three have been on the team all four years. They spend multiple hours after school each week with head coach Stacey Armstrong studying programming strategies, learning new content and completing practice problems.

“At Cypress Woods, we call this the ‘212° Spirit,’ putting in every single degree of effort required to make the water boil,” said Joseph Gaasbeck, Cypress Woods’ assistant coach. “All of this consistent hard work led to their success.”

That’s far from the only victory the Wildcats have brought home this year. They’ve also won the Katy Tompkins and Fort Bend Clements invitationals. In late March, they took home the title at the UIL District 16-6A contest.

Now, the team is getting ready to head to Baylor University on April 24 and April 25 where they will compete at the UIL Region 2 competition.
