LSC-CyFair Beta Lambda Mu Officers Earn Prestigious PTK Distinguished Team Award
Lone Star College-CyFair’s Beta Lambda Mu Chapter officers recently earned Phi Theta Kappa’s (PTK) Distinguished Chapter Officer Team Award, a highly competitive honor with recognition given to the top 10% of chapters worldwide.
“We are thrilled to be able to represent LSC-CyFair in such an incredible way,” said Maya Mantha, chapter president. “We had a vision … to not just hold events, but to build the leaders of tomorrow, especially those who never believed they had the potential to lead. Seeing that vision being recognized truly blows me away …. This honor means more than we can put into words, and it only motivates us to continue serving with even greater purpose and heart.”
PTK’s Distinguished Chapter Officer Team Award honors chapters whose officer teams demonstrate exceptional leadership, teamwork and impact on the college and community. Award eligibility requires officers to have a 3.5+ GPA with selection based on outstanding efforts in PTK’s hallmarks of scholarship, leadership, service and undergraduate research, most notably the Honors in Action Project and the College Project.
“We are so proud of this outstanding officer team, whose compassion and research efforts raised awareness and positively impacted the well-being of fellow students and community children,” said Director of Student Life Dan Mitsven, interim Beta Lamda Mu Chapter advisor. “Earning the PTK Distinguished Chapter Officer Team Award for the fourth time in our chapter’s history (last awarded in 2017) is impressive and shows the caliber of the student leadership and service at LSC-CyFair.”

This Beta Lambda Mu officer team’s Honors in Action research project focused on stories of misinformation, disinformation and information, in particular, how AI may be negatively impacting children’s learning in this day and age, Mantha said. Research led the team to the recognition that stories shape how children understand emotions, values and the world around them. Further exploration of AI-generated children’s books made them even more aware of how much humanity matters in storytelling. In collaboration with the joint campus and community library, their findings were displayed.
This team’s College Project involved a “Campus Connect” campaign launched to connect students with resources that successfully help decrease the number of student withdrawals from college, Mantha said. Through a two-part interclub and interdepartment campaign effort, Beta Lambda Mu raised awareness of and how to access resources for basic needs and academic support available at the college.
In addition to Mantha, a mechanical engineering major with hopes to work in the aerospace field, Beta Lambda Mu’s officer team includes Nermeen Elmetni, Vice President of Service, a project management major minoring in the arts; Ahsen Ishtiaq, Vice President of Leadership, a cybersecurity major; Mari Santa Ana, Vice president of Fellowship, a biology major and future nurse; and Jessica Comaitos, Public Relations Officer, a biology major with plans to transfer to the University of Texas at Tyler.
LSC-CyFair’s Beta Lambda Mu Chapter received the prestigious PTK officer team award and were formally recognized during the March annual convention, PTK Catalyst 2026, in Baltimore, Maryland. For information on Beta Lambda Mu Chapter, email Dan.Mitsven@LoneStar.edu.
